Hwyl Fawr Frank Lloyd Wright
June 2010
Community Performance and Webcast
Aberteifi/Cardigan
A seven-hour durational performance including 14 musical acts simultaneously webcast in celebration of Cardigan town’s maritime heritage and history of emigration. The performance offered a contemporary take on Eisteddfodic traditions as the town, which claims to be the birthplace of the Eisteddfod, celebrated its 900th anniversary. Participating community choirs and other local artists were invited to sing a short set of 20 minutes on the themes of sea, travel, trade, hiraeth, leaving and return. The project was funded by the public art agency Safle and was conceived in response to the television series Channel 4’s Big Art Project a documentary which followed the fortunes of six communities as they embarked on a public art commissioning process. The work proposed for Cardigan by new media artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer was never installed. Hwyl Fawr can be taken to mean ‘big sail’ or ‘farewell’.
